WHAT WE DO
Mosaic Innovates was founded on the intersection of education and community development, and in order to build the equitable resources our underserved and underrepresented communities need, we need to educate, encourage, empower by navigating the new norm with confidence.
CURRENT CONDITIONS
Black student data reported by the California Dept of Education shows that 80% cannot perform math at grade level. 67% cannot read or write; while NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) reports that black students have not shown rates of progress since the year 2000. There has been inadequate funding allocated to support black parent involvement in a relevant way, and there is inadequate funding allocated outside of ADA (Americans w/ Disabilities Act) for black students as a subpopulation within the district. In addition, there is also a lack of black educators, administrators, and decision-makers within school districts.
There are COVID-19 priorities of significance, in effectively communicating with stakeholders around the community. Online video conferencing must be astutely employed, but effective engagement with the players is every bit as important. Technology dependence fatigue, recent race-related unrest, reluctance of local area officials to add more to their plate. Each of these areas will require tangible and sustained effort.

PROJECT ACTIVITY
In an effort to build the equitable resources needed for communities of color, Mosaic Innovates anticipates creating a California “wildfire” campaign or initiative where families within the black communities become the forefront of community led-reform in quality public education and civic support.
Starting in July 2020 over three months, Mosaic Innovates plans to teach families, students, and educators how to make informed decisions when it comes to their educational options. In addition, train parents and community leaders about school district infrastructure with the intention they run for elected open seats in the future.
Our Community Leadership, Engagement and Innovation Program uses a technology application, developed by our collaboration partner, Stemtac LLC entitled the Outreach & Engagement Rapid Feedback Tool (OERFT), provides a way to have the community provide instant feedback, voice their opinions, their specific interests, and their needs before, during, and immediately after a community gathering, event, or convening.

DESIRED OUTCOME
Parents who participate in the program will make informed decisions about their child’s education, community members who fight for quality education alongside parents will improve and garner a trust necessary to create impactful change, and majority key stakeholders will ensure proper “check & balances” within the education system and community development.
